Are Your Beliefs Working For You?

(c) 2001 Marnie Pehrson

"Make sure the beliefs you model yield the fruit you want."

The more I study human nature, the more I see that the actions that people take in their lives are a direct result of their core beliefs and values. Tony Robbins is famous for teaching people how to model the belief systems of those who are successful. For example, in one instance, Tony studied the belief systems of the very best shooters in the U.S. Army and installed those belief systems into his own mind and into the minds of the new recruits. Even though he knew nothing about shooting when he walked through the door and had never even held a gun, he was able to increase the number of people who passed the shooting tests from 30 to
90 percent.

This is a powerful example of what belief systems can do. If having certain beliefs make you successful at a particular endeavor, then it follows that other beliefs would make you unsuccessful. Perhaps it would benefit us to analyze our beliefs. Have you ever really thought about your beliefs? What do you believe about your business, relationships, families, religion, politics, and life in general? Now, how happy and fulfilled do you feel in those same areas?

Are your beliefs working for you? If you are unhappy in your life or unhappy in your relationships, is it possible that the beliefs you hold in these areas might not be the best? If you are not successful in your business endeavors, might it be a result of your belief system about business? Or perhaps you are successful but not accomplishing all that you desire, might your beliefs need some tweaking?

If you want to improve an area of your life, seek out those who excel in that area and ask them about their beliefs. If they are excellent at networking, ask them about their basic beliefs around networking. One belief successful networkers hold is that one cannot be truly successful alone. If you are a lone ranger type, this belief might be a hard pill to take. But nonetheless, if you want to be a great networker, you'll need to change your thinking in this respect. You'll need to install the belief that ''I cannot be truly successful alone.''

By their fruits you shall know them . . .

Be careful taking advice from people whose belief systems do not produce the results you want in your life. If you have a friend who is having a hard time in his marriage, you wouldn't go to him for relationship advice. Evidently, his beliefs are not working for him. There is a saying from the Bible that states, ''by their fruits you shall know them.'' This means that the results and achievements people produce in their lives bears a direct correlation to their belief systems. If you see someone who is happy, fulfilled and balanced in life, s/he evidently has a belief system that is
working. By installing the same beliefs into your life, you will produce similar results. If you install the belief system of someone who is confused about life, you'll produce similar results in your life.

So be careful whom you model. Make sure that the beliefs you model yield the fruit you want. Look for the results. Don't trust people at their word. Model those who walk their talk and really produce tangible results.
